Lead Paint Poisoning

Very high levels of lead metal in the body cause lead poisoning in humans. Though there are different sources and causes of lead poisoning, exposure to lead due to lead-based paints is one of the main reasons.

Exposure to lead based paints can cause serious blood, kidney, reproductive and nervous disorders. High levels of lead exposure can also cause seizures and psychological problems besides causing chronic and acute lead poisoning.

Kids particularly below 6, pregnant women and pets in the house are found to be more likely to be affected by lead poisoning due to exposure to lead-based paints. Worn-out and deteriorating paints from walls, ceilings, windows, doors and lead based toys are found to be the main route for lead exposure risk in children.

Lead dust is usually generated due to deteriorating paints which are ingested easily by children. Also swallowing cracked paint chips which contain high levels of lead causes lead poisoning in children. Removing lead paints during repair or renovation work produces lead dusts and fumes considerably, which when ingested also causes lead poisoning. Adults likewise are also highly risked to lead based paint hazards during painting, renovation and other occupational work.

However lead poisoning can be prevented by lessening contact with lead and lead based paints. Local health departments can be consulted for testing paints before starting painting works or removal of lead based paints. Hiring a trained and certified contractor and making necessary safety arrangement is a must before conducting safe lead paint removal and painting work.

During these works, one should guarantee that children are not in contact with any peeled paint chips. Children and pregnant women should not be allowed to help, disturb or be present during renovation/remodelling or cleaning work during or immediately after painting or removal of lead based paints. In fact the area of work should be cordoned off by sealing with thick plastic sheets and making necessary temporary arrangement for all family members for their safe stay. Daily and final cleaning along with permanent disposal of rubbishes should be carried out as per rules for getting rid of any lead dust during work.

Everyday cleanliness habits should be followed like regularly washing your child’s hands and toys to get rid of dust or other lead causes. Since dust at houses is major cause for lead, floors and other surfaces should be mopped with water regularly. Windows and doors should also be kept clean. These basic but important safety steps will ensure that all home owners and their family are free from the risk of lead based paints and lead poisoning as much as possible.
